Teacher Gift Ideas

How is it possible that we only have 6 days of school left??? Yikes! End of the school year means a couple of things - beginning of summer and the "I'm bored..." comments starting... and End of the Year Teacher Gifts.
Since I shared a ton of Christmas craft ideas with you back in December, I have been compiling a few ideas for teacher gift ideas over the past few weeks. A few of these, I made during Teacher Appreciation Week a few weeks ago, and a few are ideas I am saving for next year!

My all-time favorite idea - I have done this one several times. This makes a very special gift for the teacher - sweet sentiments from their students, and cold, hard cash!

Here a couple pics of ones that I made a few years ago...

Tying it with fun ribbon is a great way to present it.

I got this idea from an incredibly creative blogger, and she gives great instructions on how to make it here! Go check it out, you will love it, I promise!

I love this idea (although I haven't made this one yet). Cute clipboards!

This idea can be found here!

Here is another that I did a couple of years ago - crayon monograms!

This was my version - I printed the name on cardstock, and then added the crayons with hot glue. The frames were from Ikea.

These were super easy to make, but you can find some instructions here.

I made these for teacher appreciation week this year - totally easy and cute! I picked up the wooden spools at Micheals and spray painted them, and didn't use any special paper punches, I just cut some things free hand. Instructions here.

You can also find these cute ideas on the same site -

Here is another little project I did for Teacher Appreciation Week this year - snazzy scissors! (What can I say, it was a crafty week for me this year)

You can find the tutorial for these scissors here. I didn't ever find the type of modge podge they called for, so I just used what I had and it worked out fine! I picked up 3 packs of scissors from Big Lots for $2!

Another really cool thing I ran across this year was Teacher Appreciation Subway Art! The printable is free and can be located here. I love the way it looks on a clipboard, but I found some canvases at Big Lots, cheap. So, I took some scrapbook paper I had on hand, and modge podged the quote on top of the paper on top of the canvas.

Some other equally fantastic ideas from eighteen25's blog:

This one is totally awesome - I would have loved to have received this when I was a teacher (in my past life I taught high school - crazy, huh?)

You can see how she did this here.

Once you are all finished with your teacher gifts, next you can whip up this awesome Summer To-Do List!

Happy Summer!

Meet Jessica

Most of you know that Sweet Funky Vintage was started by Missy (me) and Liz, several years ago. We had a blast growing our little idea into the company it is today. Last year, Liz bought a local embroidery business in Tallahassee, FL, and just wasn't able to continue with Sweet Funky Vintage. She is now busy making her new business venture into just the most fantastic gift go-to store! So, if you are in her neck of the woods, be sure to stop in and shop at M&M Monogramming and Gifts. We were sad to part ways at SFV, but wish her the very best of luck!
Liz was able to turn over her part of Sweet Funky Vintage to a wonderful new addition to SFV - Jessica Lane.
Jessica and I knew of each other and had a few mutual friends through the selling of custom children's clothing on Ebay. When I found out that I was moving to San Diego, I started asking around for more information about the area and that sort of thing. One friend mentioned that she was pretty sure that Jessica lived in the neighborhood I was moving into! Small world! I reached out to her by email and she said that it was funny, but she was pretty sure that she had read my daughter's name on the class list of the preschool in which she was teaching. Smaller world! As it turns out, not only did we live in the same neighborhood, and she was my daughter's preschool teacher, but our husbands were also both Marines! So, Jessica and I have been friends for the past three years, and now we are also partners in Sweet Funky Vintage.

I wanted you all to get to know Jessica a little bit better, so I had her answer a few questions for us!

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Well, I’d probably describe myself by my family: mom to 2 beautiful kids, and wife to 1 handsome Marine. I’d like to say I’m creative and caring. That I love color and fabric and crafts. I love to create new things and make people happy!

2. How you first got involved in with children’s clothing?
I’ve been sewing most of my life~ both of my Grandmothers were quilters, so sewing was always a part of family culture. When my nieces were little I made them dresses and clothes, and when I had my own kids, my love for sewing was rekindled. I love heirloom sewing and classic styles, but also love to use bright colors and funky twists.

3. What do you do when you aren’t working at Sweet Funky Vintage?
Usually I’m running my two kids around~ church, sports, after school activities and play dates (“hang outs” they say~ thank you Diary of a Wimpy Kid!)

4. If you were stranded on a desert island and were allowed one luxury item, what would it be and why?
Oh my…. A refrigerator filled with a never ending supply of Diet Coke. I’m an addict, what can I say?

5. Do you have any phobias?
Spiders. And I’m not fond of other creepy crawlies. But spiders I have the kids put outside for me… I can’t kill ‘em (even though my husband says, “You’re a thousand times bigger than it!” But I don’t really want to kill them… I just don’t want them inside!)

6. Who inspires you and why? So many people! My Mom~ for her unconditional love and guidance. So many of my friends~ each for different reasons. Historical figures~ usually the ones who defied convention and changed their world!

7. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Selfishly~ probably to be able to fly, just for the sheer joy of it!
For World Peace maybe super strength? Or the ability to stop time? Whatever would cause people to pause and really join together. Is there any ability to do that???

8. Can you tell us one thing about yourself that would surprise people who know you?
Most people are surprised to learn that I went to a military academy (go USAFA!) and was in the Air Force for 5 ½ years. It always shocks people to learn that! And that I was a chemistry major~ that shocks people too! Maybe I don’t radiate “nerd” like I thought I did.

Jessica's fun facts include……
-(fact about your family)~ I love to play games! We don’t do it often enough, but I love games.

-(what you spend most of your time doing)
These days it’s probably work and Mom-taxi. I’m trying to enjoy it though, because I know soon enough I’ll miss it!

-Ferocious reader, when it includes ________.
Science Fiction. I love sci fi! LOL

-________ makes her weak in the knees.
My hubby. Rofl… is that too cheesy? Really? Someone who makes me laugh, is caring, loving, and kind. Before hubby~ a foreign accent! LOL I’m a sucker for a foreign accent.

What's Shakin' Bacon?

Okay, so the title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with anything, it just popped into my head as I began to type! So, forgive me for being a tad silly this morning.
We had an absolutely fabulous time at the Queen Bee Market this past weekend. We met some of the most darling people, experienced a room just bursting with creativity and were surrounded by beeeee-utiful things. Oh, and we might have done a tiny bit of shopping too! Here are a few of the beautiful things I purchased...

This necklace was so pretty, and pink! I just had to have it. I needed it. Really, I did. If you want one of your very own, it is by Allora Handmade.
I also bought a new checkbook cover from The Pleated Poppy. From our favorite things giveaway, you already knew I was in love with everything from The Pleated Poppy. I was still carrying around a cracked plastic freebie from the bank, so it was definitely time to pretty up that checkbook cover!

This isn't a picture of my cover, but of another very similar to it. Of course mine has pink on it!!
I also did quite a bit of shopping with Funky Vintage Lovely. She has the most divine things! And so much more fabulous in person. Beyond fabulous really! I bought the most adorable magnetic recipe card holder, and a wonderful vintage frame that I am going to put chicken wire in and make into a message board (like a cork board with clothespins instead of push pins).
I also bought a headband with flowers on it from Whippy Cake. I have been coveting some Whippy Cake for quite some time. Squeeee - now I have one of my very own!

Here is a picture of the flowers I bought. They have clips on them to clip to a blouse or whatever (like shown here), but also velcro to attach to a headband. I bought a thin elastic headband to give it a try and was really excited to find one that didn't slip back on my head - it totally stayed in place!

Okay, back to business... Sweet Funky Vintage has a lot of exciting things going on right now. We are busy getting ready for our Fall 2011 season - Around the World! We are already shipping out samples to our photographer for our 3rd catalog. Have you booked your trunk show yet? You want to book early to get your choice of dates! Our Christmas collection will sell out and I promise you will want SFV in your closets this holiday season! To book a show, just email Sydney!
